A serious first step,
not a sales call.

The process begins with a paid consultation. Its purpose is to understand the student properly, identify the academic or strategic issues, and determine whether I am the right person to help. Parents are then given a clear view of priorities, recommended next steps, and the likely structure of any ongoing support.

Serious academic support,
built around the individual.

AGF is deliberately boutique. I work with a limited number of students and families, combining subject teaching with academic judgement, long-term strategy and admissions experience.

For Parents

Judgement as well as tuition.

A clear view of where a student stands, what needs to change, and how to plan intelligently rather than reactively.

For Students

Clarity, discipline and confidence.

Difficult material explained properly, followed by the practice needed to make understanding durable under pressure.

For Applicants

A coherent admissions strategy.

Course selection, essays, testing, interviews and positioning brought together as one process rather than a series of disconnected tasks.

The educator behind
AGF Tutoring.

My work over the past thirty years has centred on a single question: how students come to understand difficult ideas clearly, and how that clarity translates into performance under examination conditions.

My academic background combines the sciences with a longstanding interest in language, cognition and the way people learn. That combination has shaped a method that is both analytical and diagnostic: I am interested not merely in what a student gets wrong, but in where understanding first begins to slip.

Most academic difficulty does not arise from lack of ability. It arises from confusion left unresolved — often small at first, but increasingly costly under pressure. My work is to identify those points of divergence, rebuild understanding from first principles, and translate that understanding into precise, confident performance.

Beyond the lesson

The aim is not simply higher grades, though grades matter. It is the development of a more stable and exact way of thinking. That is why my work frequently extends beyond a single subject into academic mentoring, university choices, applications and longer-term educational strategy.

  • More than 30 years of private tutoring and academic mentoring
  • Extensive experience with UK, US and European university pathways
  • Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry across major international qualifications
  • Admissions tests, applications, interviews and scholarship strategy

Teaching as a
diagnostic process.

The method is simple in outline but exacting in practice. The visible mistake is often only the last link in a much longer chain.

01

Diagnose

Find where understanding first breaks down, not simply where the final answer goes wrong.

02

Rebuild

Restore the concept from first principles, using intuition before procedure.

03

Clarify

Introduce exact language, formal structure and disciplined written expression.

04

Test

Use carefully chosen questions to establish whether the idea is genuinely secure.

05

Extend

Move from competence to mastery, particularly with unfamiliar questions and pressure.

Breadth where useful.
Depth where it matters.

Mathematics

A-Level, IAL, IB, GCSE, IGCSE, AP Calculus, SAT and ACT mathematics.

Physics

A-Level, IAL, IB, GCSE, IGCSE and AP Physics, with emphasis on reasoning and exam precision.

Chemistry

A-Level, IAL, IB, GCSE, IGCSE and AP Chemistry, from fundamentals to advanced exam practice.

Admissions & Tests

SAT, ACT, LNAT, UCAT, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, TOEFL and interview preparation.

A digital extension of the method —
not the centre of it.

The AI Study Companion remains part of AGF, but as a supporting tool: something students can use between live sessions for explanations, quizzes and revision grounded in AGF material. It is free for up to three enquiries, and available without charge to all students who work directly with Alastair.

Support between lessons.

The companion is designed to extend the same diagnostic approach beyond the live session. It can help a student clarify a concept, practise exam-style questions, identify a weak step and return to the relevant notes. All students who work directly with Alastair have full access at no additional charge.

  • Exam-board-specific explanations and questions
  • Diagnostic quizzes and targeted feedback
  • Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
  • Free for up to three enquiries

Why is the bond angle in H₂O smaller than in NH₃?
Before applying VSEPR mechanically, compare the number of lone pairs. The key missing idea is that lone pair–lone pair repulsion is stronger than lone pair–bond pair repulsion. That additional repulsion compresses the H–O–H bond angle more strongly.
Next question: can you now predict the relative bond angle in CH₄ and explain why?

Begin with a
paid consultation.

Every new engagement begins with a one-hour paid consultation with Alastair Fisher. This is a substantive academic and strategic assessment: we review the student’s current position, objectives, relevant school or examination context, and the most appropriate form of support.
